Whether you’re in need of web development for a basic Startup information page or a custom CMS-based website it’s important to understand the differences a choose a route that best fits your needs.
Content Management Systems
What do you want out of your website? Are you looking to generate more revenue? If your main goal is to drive more traffic to your website and gain more lead submissions then a custom Content Management System (CMS) is the route to go. A CMS is a software application that can be used to manage the creation and modification of digital content. CMS’s allow individuals and businesses to edit, manage and maintain existing website pages in a single interface without too much technical knowledge. When it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), CMS’s are great because they are so common world wide. ‘WordPress’ is a great example of a commonly used CMS, due to it being one of the top CMS’s asides ‘Joomla’ it has plenty of third-party plugins to help with SEO.
These are a great option if your looking to quickly create a basic website with some information. However, a website template might be too limiting for you, there is a lot more limitations when using a template from a large corporation like ‘WIX’, ‘GoDaddy’ or ‘Squarespace’. If you are not replacing the same types of content from the template with yours, such as images and text, you may come across complications such as page insertion and deletion problems, page layout issues, photo and text addition or omission problems, among others. If you are not familiar with codding and experienced with different types of programming languages it can become quite difficult if not more difficult and costly then creating a customized website with a CMS.
If third-party’s, APIs or connections of some sort need to be integrated into your website, a template is not recommended direction to take. Often, integrations such as CRMs, custom portals or marketing systems will require custom code and styling from a professional, this can be costly and almost more difficult then integrating with a CMS. Overall, if your plan is to create a professional looking website that is responsive and easy to manage, a Content Management System is best for you when it comes to web development.
