MariaDB Galera Cluster

MariaDB Galera Cluster is a MySQL cluster solution available for Linux. Having a trusty, fast and broad MySQL database key for your business is vital when it comes to your MySQL reliant applications. Hence, our decision to tell you a little bit about it.

What’s the difference between MySQL and MariaDB?

MariaDB is (and claims to always be) open source, written by the original MySQL builders. The project means to make migration seamless for current MySQL databases. Maria DB is a drop-in replacement of MySQL, which is now owned by Oracle. MariaDB Server is licensed as GPLv2, while MySQL has two licensing options – GPLv2 (for Community edition) and Enterprise. Truly, the main difference between the two licenses for MySQL are the available features and support.

MariaDB Galera Cluster is a virtually synchronous multi-master cluster for MariaDB. It is only available on Linux. Moreover, it only supports the XtraDB/InnoDB storage engines.

Features:

  • Virtually synchronous replication
  • Active-active multi-master topology
  • Read and write to any cluster node
  • Automatic membership control, failed nodes drop from the cluster
  • Automatic node joining
  • True parallel replication, on row level
  • Direct client connections, native MariaDB look & feel

Benefits:

  • No slave lag
  • No lost transactions
  • Read scalability
  • Smaller client latencies

There are some great guides online available, for example MariaDB Getting Started Guide. Certainly, these tutorials can help you build your very own Galera cluster quickly. Take the time to take in tutorials and guides, as they can help you in many ways. Plus, there are many cloud providers which are great for hosting your Galera clusters: for instance, Amazon AWS Digital Ocean, Linode, and Microsoft Azure.

Contact us with any questions you have about your cluster solutions! At Nexix, we are always ready and eager to help with any of your technical needs.
